Footwear

Thank you Fair Lawn and Monroe-Woodbury Jr. Track & Field for providing us with this information.

FOOTWEAR

Shoes must fit correctly, have soles that bend, and are light.

There are many types of running shoes, throwing shoes, jumping shoes.

About running shoes:

Different from basketball, tennis, and hiking sneakers. Three primary things to consider.

  1. The best and safest models are the ones that have a strong plastic heel cup. It is very easy to tell if the shoe contains that opposed to a cardboard one. Squeeze the back of the heel cup from both sides and also from the back. It should be very firm and not collapse easily. This is the most important part of the running shoe.
  2. Bend the front of the shoe upward - the shoe should bend to the second shoelace. This is the second most important item.
  3. Laces only, - no velcro.

If it is your child’s first year go for a middle-distance running shoe. New Balance seems to be the most recommended followed by many other brands. Brands are Nike, New Balance, Adidas, Asics, Saucony, etc. and you should be able to purchase a pair for $25 to $100.

The fit and make of the shoe is the most important factor.

SPIKES (for sprinters)

1/8 inch spikes are permitted at our developmental meets but not necessary.  In most cases buying spikes is an extra expense that is not necessary.
